Written by Terence: The development of the Euro/Asiatic 'Bog Seat' The idea was conceived at a combined (tented accommodation) guest night somewhere in the Arakan when well laced by the Officers ration of Rosa xxx Rum 73rd Co and Malerkotla Field Co. It was to find a solution to the problem of differing habits; normal seated comfort for Europeans and the standing Asiatic squat. The latrine consisted of a hole dug with an earthauger which was just right for an empty 5 gallon drum to push-fit into the top to form the pillar of the loo. A wooden seat with a hole completed the European version. A second flap was hinged in three pieces to form a stand on top. This needed careful propping up to avoid tilting as one foot was placed on the left flap followed by the second foot on the right, the middle flap remained open.
